Collected from Huetepara/ Lyall Bay, this rimurapa (bull kelp) carries the leather of storms, dark currents, and the quiet labour of the artist. Bathed, photographed, and returned to the foreshore, the process recalls mahika kai traditions in which pōha crafted from rimurapa held tītī and nourished communities. Whilst the work’s title gestures toward Linnaean classification, the work itself embodies kaitiakitanga and the value of care for resources and their ecosystems.
