Soundings brings together fifteen artists in an exploratory conversation. ‘Nine Fathom Deep’ is drawn from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. In Soundings, each artist lowers a sounding line of their own, reflecting on our name as they trace connections to the poem and its central themes.
The poem follows a journey across a critical threshold — one that the (ancient) mariner must fathom in his search for redemption. Steeped in the Romantic sublime, its narrative is lush and emotive. For several artists in the exhibition, the notion of a tipping point feels urgently contemporary. Others probe the shifting relationship between humans and the natural world, or the capacity to fathom loss.
It feels apt for our new gallery to launch with Soundings, as we chart our course, nine fathoms in, taking soundings through contemporary currents and an emerging geography.
